Lowry turned the tables on that matchup nicely in Game 2, taking advantage of the young Bucks guard. It would take a combination of patience and decisiveness.
It was clear early on that the Raptors had placed an emphasis on this.
"Our energy has gotten up, we're playing harder".
Stackhouse, a defence-first coach like the man he worked under in Toronto in Dwane Casey, led the 905s to a 39-11 mark and the first Central Division title for the team in only its second year of existence. I understand the threat of playing Telly, who can get hot at any moment, but Beas poses a better all-around scoring threat with the strength to body up the Raptors bigs on both ends of the floor. When Matthew Dellavedova double-teamed him, he found P.J. Tucker. "It's just who he is, he's a fighter, a competitor, and I knew he wasn't going to (be) satisfied with the way he played in the first game". "Trying to put them in rotation".
For the Raptors, they can't afford to miss seven free throws as they did in Game 2, 16 in total for the two games.
"It's always been the same since training camp", coach Jason Kidd said, "trust, play hard and make a play for a teammate".
"Just play, go out there and make my shots, being aggressive", Lowry said. He's become an All-Star and one of the more exciting players in the National Basketball Association. The good ball movement that led to both of those leads was replaced by lazy cross-court passes that were easily picked off, or the ball movement stopped altogether and bad shots were taken resulting in empty possessions.
Regardless, Snell shot 40.6 per cent from 3-point range this year. Also notable: the Raptors had 24 assists on their 37 field goals. It created different looks for the Bucks defense, and helped keep their own rhythm.
"That's what it has to be", Patterson said.
"It's going to be a battle", Casey said looking ahead to Game 3 on Thursday in Milwaukee.
Toronto finished the third quarter up 84-83.
Prior to the start of Game 3, the Milwaukee Bucks Playoff Pep Rally, presented by Palermo's Pizza, will tip things off in the southeast plaza of the BMO Harris Bradley Center beginning at 4 p.m.
How can I watch or listen to the game?
None of this is to say that Toronto has figured Milwaukee out.
The good news is the Raptors themselves are far from satisfied with their current level of play, as improved as it was from that first game. Toronto recovered to take Game 2, but it didn't come easy; Milwaukee wiped out multiple deficits of 10 points or more, and tied the game with two minutes to play before the Raptors finally pulled away for a 106-100 victory.
Outside of the basic numbers, the Bucks have shown they are not an outmatched team getting lucky.
Fellow All Star DeMar DeRozan is Lowry's closest friend on the Raptors, but said he hasn't felt the need to deliver any kind of message of support or encouragement to his locker room neighbour.
