2017 mtv movie and tv awards News, Pictures, and Videos

The MTV Movie and TV Awards will air Sunday, May 7 at 8/7c on MTV.

The platform-agnostic categories see Moonlight up against This Is Us for "best tearjerker", along with Game of Thrones, Me Before You and Grey's Anatomy.

The non-gendered categories also make for some unique match-ups.

"Get Out", written and directed by comedian Jordan Peele, earned six nominations including for movie of the year, best actor for star Daniel Kaluuya, best villain and a new category called "best fight against the system".

McCarthy said doing away with a distinction between male and female roles felt like a good way to acknowledge the shift in the audience's consciousness.

Susan Sarandon, who stars in the film as Ray's grandmother commented, "3 GENERATIONS is an important movie for everyone to see, especially transgender youth who are feeling isolated or fearful and their families". "So we wanted to take those down". There are kids all over this country that are still too fearful to speak out and to step out; they're too alone to fight, lacking the kinds of support that would let them feel free to be themselves. "When he hosted, I was like, 'Uh, I want to host that so bad!' It seems like the most fun awards show possible".

"Today, we see what's happening - whether it's Black Lives Matter, the Women's March", he said.

This will certainly be a year to remember when it comes to Hollywood awards.

"This film is a handsome and touching story about family and identity", said Watts, who stars in the film as the mother of the protagonist Ray, played by Fanning, and who also is an executive producer.

This is the first year in which the former MTV Movie Awards are recognizing television, which means movie and TV nominees go head to head in the same specialty categories.
