Image via TwitterAs The State reports from South Carolina: "The former Heisman trophy victor will begin his minor league career with the Columbia Fireflies, the Class A affiliate of the New York Mets". They're in the South Atlantic League, Southern Division - as are the Asheville Tourists, who couldn't help taking a shot at the Fireflies and Tebow mere moments after the assignment was announced.
"We were concerned that it might be a stretch at some point, or could be a stretch, but what he's done in spring training has convinced us that this is where he should go". When he's made contact, it's often been hard contact ...
Katz said how long Tebow's stay will last will depend how comfortable the Mets' organization is with his progress.
"That's such a bogus argument", Alderson said.
Once he gets a feel for his environment and the level of pitching he's facing, he'll be able to better determine what his end game is and how to get there. "He's made some nice plays, again demonstrating the athleticism that everybody's seen he has". The former two-time Heisman Trophy victor and National Football League quarterback is joining the Columbia Fireflies. Tebow, 29, will be up to a decade older than some players he faces, although far less experienced from a baseball standpoint.
The Fireflies open the season at home on April 6 against Augusta (Ga.), beginning a seven-game homestand.
Tim Tebow's first stop on what he hopes is a journey to the major leagues has been determined.
