Penélope Cruz is Donatella Versace in 'Versace: American Crime Story'

We already knew that Lady Gaga won't be playing Donatella Versace in American Crime Story Season 3, but now we know who will: Oscar victor Penelope Cruz will portray the fashion executive and designer on Ryan Murphy's series, People confirmed.

American Crime Story's core producing team - Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, all Emmy winners for People v O.J. Simpson as Best Limited Series - executive produce Versace alongside Smith.

American Crime Story's first series, which told the story of the 1994/5 OJ Simpson murder trial, dominated awards season, winning a record-breaking 10 Emmys. Meanwhile, Darren Criss of Glee fame was already cast in the role of Andrew Cunanan, the serial killer responsible for Gianni's murder.

Earlier this year, there were reports that Lady Gaga would portray the fashion icon (given their physical similarity, and that she worked on Murphy's other show American Horror Story, this seemed a logical casting).

Based on the book Vulgar Favors by Maureen Orth, Versace: American Crime Story starts production next month. "She's a friend. But she's very busy this next year - she's doing Super Bowl and then she's doing A Star Is Born and I believe that she's going on tour", said Murphy.

It has been revealed (via Variety) that 2018's Versace: American Crime Story will be headlined by Penélope Cruz.

Cruz hardly appears on television, but is known for her roles several movies including her Oscar-winning one in Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2009. In 2018, look for her and Edgar Ramirez to share the screen yet again in the feature film Love Child. Will you tune in to watch her take on Donatella?
