Villanova's opening night performance as a No. 1 overall seed did nothing to inspire confidence that this group - Nova's seniors are 129-16 in the past four years - is capable of becoming the first team since Florida in 2007 to cut the nets down for the second straight year. This is the lowest they have been seeded since 2009, when they were a No. 12 and upset Florida.
"In the earlier parts of the season, there were probably times where he was forcing some looks or not taking the best shots, shooting a little bit too quickly", Brown said.
"Obviously, we thought we might have a higher seed than that", senior guard Zak Showalter said. But this loss, of course, is the game they'll remember. "We have two rooms in the hotel and one room is for studying".
After the bracket announcement, Williams tweeted out a video of him line dancing to celebrate the school's return to the Big Dance.
When Martin took the job five years ago, you could hear about every instruction he called out, the cavernous, 18,000-seat home arena was so empty.
"Odds are, no matter who we played, unless it was Northwestern, we were going to have more newbies", Williams said. Two of the made free throws completed 3-point plays to give UW leads of five and four points. Both Allen and LeDay come off the bench. If that wasn't enough, Hayes also grabbed 10 rebounds, with six coming on the offensive end.
After a missed 3-pointer by Koenig and a turnover by Hart, Wisconsin would give it right back to the Wildcats when a crosscourt pass by Koenig was intercepted by DiVencenzo, who was promptly fouled by Hayes. Darryl Reynolds has eight such games on his resume while sophomores Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson have each logged meaningful minutes in seven of those contests. The Wildcats saw a terrible performance from Kris Jenkins, who went 2 of 13 from the field and had 7 points in 33 minutes, but still avoided the unlikely upset and soldiered on.
This is just the second meeting between the two programs. Wisconsin won 74-72 at Virginia Tech in 2008.
The Badgers are the only team in the country to make the Sweet 16 in the past three seasons, a testament to the experience of head coach Greg Gard's team.
Sometimes it ends with a dogpile on the last Monday night of the college basketball season with the world watching and a One Shining Moment tribute, and most of the time it doesn't, and this time it ended in sorrow in the KeyBank Center. Happ leads in rebounds with 9.1 and in assists with 2.8 per game. If a team is just all post game, and you're able to kind of shut down their post game, you can kind of have an easier route. The Wildcats will face Wisconsin in the second round on Saturday.
The Wildcats likely can't afford another slow start against aBadgers team that topped Virginia Tech on Thursday behind Bronson Koenig and Nigel Hayes, two seniors with a pair of Final Fours on their resume.
Less than a minute later, a 3-pointer by Koenig would tie the game at 57 apiece.
