In a long Instragram post, Murray said "there wasn't a thought in my mind" about attempting to wear Peterson's number while he's in Minnesota, because of the respect for what Peterson has done and what he means to the Vikings. Murray reached 1,000 yards rushing in the 2015 season but had to settle for only 788 yards as he split time with other backs previous year.
When Peterson's dad came out and said he and his son liked the Raiders' offensive line, taking a shot at the Vikings' unit, it ruffled a few feathers in Minnesota.
However, the former Oakland Raiders' running back is quite aware of his new surroundings as Murray has already released a statement regarding the man that he is replacing: Adrian Peterson. He declined to say whether Peterson was ever given an offer from the team after Minnesota decided not to exercise his contract option for the 2017 season. The Seahawks signed Eddie Lacy instead, and I suspect cost was the primary reason why.
Peterson is still a free agent, and a reunion with the Vikings has always been considered a possibility for the running back.
Classy move by the newest Viking.
Congratulations to Latavius Murray on reaching a deal with the Minnesota Vikings. A proven power runner with short-yardage prowess - as evidenced by 12 rushing touchdowns last season - he also feels he can be used in the passing game. He took care of online coursework for a Marketing Management class toward his MBA through Syracuse while his agent and the Vikings were engaged in negotiations on Wednesday night.
The impact was immediate, with Peterson rushing for an National Football League single-game record 296 yards in his eighth game and second of six times in which he rushed for more than 200 yards in a game.
"I'm planning on playing next season, " Newman told the network.
