Missouri expected to hire Cuonzo Martin as men's basketball coach

The coach compiled a 62-39 record with one NCAA tournament appearance in three seasons at the school.

Cuonzo Martin is set to return to the state where he found his first success as a head coach.

Insider, Jeff Goodman sent out the tweet around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

The new Missouri coach is a native of East St. Louis, Illinois, which could make a difference in recruiting the Show-Me State moving forward.

As part of the contract he signed with Cal in June, after two years of coaching under an offer sheet, Martin owes UC Berkeley $1.2 million for leaving before April 14.

"Cuonzo Martin informed me this morning that he is resigning to accept a position at another school", Cal Athletics director Mike Williams said in a statement. California was upset at home by Cal State Bakersfield 73-66 in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday.

On the day after Indiana's basketball season concluded in the NIT, there's some coaching news out of Bloomington - but maybe not the clarity in fans have hoped for in regard to Tom Crean's fate.

But the longtime assistant at Purdue, where he enjoyed a four-year playing career, was portrayed by some Cal supporters as an underachiever for losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season and failing to get back to The Dance this year. Ryan Gorcey of Scout.com also reported the offer was for $3.5 million per year.

The Bears made the 2016 NCAA tournament but were not selected this year.
