Romulo, a father of four, is an undocumented immigrant who had been living in the USA for more than 20 years but is facing deportation for a almost 10-year-old DUI conviction as well as an incident almost 20 years ago in which he accidentally bought a auto with the wrong registration, according to Ricardo Mireles, the executive director of the Highland Park, California, charter school Academia Avance, notes KABC.
His daughter, 13-year-old Fatima Avelica, used her cellphone and recorded the moment her father was handcuffed and placed in a dark-colored vehicle by federal agents.
Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez was arrested Tuesday morning for having a 2009 DUI conviction and an outstanding deportation order from 2014, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She is one of 48-year-old Avelica-Gonzalez's two fully grown daughters. The next, she watched US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents escort him into a black auto and take him away (video below). "In a couple of hours they will have it in the system and you will be able to go to see", an officer says.
The family of undocumented immigrant Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez sobbed as their father was detained and taken away by immigration agents earlier this week as he drove them to school.
ICE officials said Avelica-Gonzalez was being detained pending a hearing on his case.
An ICE "Sensitive Locations" policy memo, which designates schools and other sensitive locations as off-limits to detentions, was first issued in 2011 and has not yet been rescinded by Trump's administration.
The executive director of Academia Avance charter school, Ricardo Mireles, gathered two dozen people to show support for the family outside the Hollenbeck community police station in Los Angeles on Thursday.
"We have worked for decades in L.A.to build stronger trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement".
An attorney for a rights group defending him also told AFP he was sought because of an incident 20 years ago in which he purchased a vehicle and used an incorrect registration sticker since he was unable to get a driver's license at the time given his undocumented status. "Misleading practices like these undermine the good faith and spirit of cooperation that is so integral to our city's safety and security". "We want all Americans to succeed - but that can't happen in an environment of lawless chaos", Trump said, as justification for the crackdown on unauthorized immigrants.
