"Anybody who likes my sense of humor, I immediately like", Bush told People while promoting his new book, "Portraits of Courage", which features his paintings of military veterans. As his wife, Laura Bush, and daughter Jenna Hager told Jimmy Fallon previous year, there was a period of time that Bush "only communicated through his art".
In July, Bush and Obama held hands while singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic during the memorial service for five police officers killed by a sniper in Dallas. He told People that Obama is fond of his humor, which, in turn, makes him fond of her.
He added to People that the photo at the Smithsonian was a "genuine expression of affection". "I needle her a little bit and around her, I'm fairly lighthearted".
The two discussed his meme-inspiring struggle to put on a poncho at President Trump's inauguration.
Bush echoed remarks he made earlier this week by saying he didn't intend to criticize Trump when he said recently that a free press is essential to democracy.
Bush is fully aware that he doesn't know how to adorn a poncho.
'We are absolutely thrilled to continue our publishing partnership with President and Mrs. Obama, ' the chief executive of Penguin Random House, Markus Dohle, said in a statement.
"I think whoever the president is gonna find out that Putin will push and push and push until somebody stands up to him", he said.
