Millions of small websites, app backends, and various high-profile services are offline or experiencing severe issues because of a mysterious problem that hit Amazon's S3 (Simple Storage Service) a few hours ago.
For that reason, entire websites rarely go down but various part of them may take a long time to load or not load at all, leaving broken links or images. We'll be sure to update this article with any more information when it becomes available.
Giphy, some functionalities in Slack, media websites, Quora and even Is It Down Right Now were all down during the AWS outage.
For S3, we believe we understand root cause and are working hard at repairing.
"We're continuing to work to remediate the availability issues for Amazon S3 in US-EAST-1", said AWS in a statement on its service health dashboard.
We at Komando.com experienced similar issues with our ad partner, PowerInbox.
This is indeed disappointing but what makes us more upset is the fact that this isn't the first time Amazon has suffered. Several Penn services that utilize AWS, including but not limited to Canvas, Zoon and Panopto, are affected by this outage that appears to be a large-scale networking issue.
A technical glitch in June past year affected a wide range of AWS-hosted services in New Zealand, from Westpac online banking to Domino's online pizza ordering to Spark's Lightbox streaming video on-demand service. However, it has grown quite a bit since then and as we see, the errors are affecting a large portion of the most popular services we access through the web.
"AWS had not had a lot of outages and when they happen, they're famous".
