It's a huge rise for the artist, who's gone from releasing his first mixtape to Grammy-winner in five years.

Earlier in the ceremony's broadcast, Chance won the Best Rap Performance award for "No Problem" featuring Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz.

Chance the Rapper is competing for the latter honor. Chance has built up a name for himself without a record label, releasing the majority of his music for free.

It's been a good night at the Grammys for Chance the Rapper, to say the least.

He took up the anti-violence cause in collaboration with his father Ken Williams-Bennett, who has served as an aide to former president Barack Obama and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Song of the year nominees are "Formation", "Hello", "7 Years", Mike Posner's "I Took a Pill in Ibiza" and Bieber's "Love Yourself", shared with co-writer Ed Sheeran. He has seven nominations, including three for best rap song.

"Shit, this is insane", he said, before thanking his friends and family. The 2017 Grammy Awards nominees were announced on December 6, with a tribute performance to Prince.

Remaining unsigned, Chance has said in previous interviews, also allows him to collaborate more freely with other musicians and build up an authentic fan base.
