And NASCAR introduced the 2016-17 NASCAR "Next" class of future stars including 15-year-old Harrison Burton, son of former Sprint Cup driver Jeff Burton.

Saturday night's All-Star race will consist of 20 drivers scheduled to race at least 113 laps divided into three segments.

"I'm as baffled as everybody", said Stewart, who missed the first eight races of the season with a broken back but was OK after Saturday's accident.

"I tell you, Larson is a hard racer", he said. "I knew I had position on him going into the corner and had to keep him on my quarter panel and not let him get to my door, so I drove in there hard". Johnson, a four-time all-star winner, ended up being passed by every auto with new tires before the end of the first lap of that final segment. That's when he scraped the wall, allowing Logano to bypass him and steal the victory.

He seemed crestfallen after the defeat. Kenseth held off Kyle Larson, still seeking his first win and rookie Chase Elliott in the AAA 400 Drive for Autism at Dover. "They did everything right. I think they ran into some scenarios tonight that they didn't anticipate, they got caught off-guard".

Watch for Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, and Brad Keselowski to be there at the finish.

Earnhardt is among those who believe if a driver is fifth to eighth place as the final segment approaches, the best strategy might be to drop back to 12th place.

During the break between Segments 2 and 3, there is a random drawing in which the number 9, 10 or 11 is selected.

Larson was the one to cross the finish line first in Segment 2.

"I don't know how you can get much more compelling racing than what we saw today, so they need to get unconfused and enjoy the racing".

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished third, and perhaps had the best summation of the night's craziness after he climbed out of his vehicle.

"I think what all those guys do is tough".

"I was confused", Logano said, per Bob Pockrass of ESPN.com. "Gimmicks and all that stuff is going down the wrong path".

"It didn't work, did it?"

In the 30 years since the race has been through a staggering 13 different formats and changed distances 10 times.

"It came from 1 (driver)", Hamlin posted.

During the pit stop between the first two segments, Dillon took only two tires. He was penalized one lap for not taking tires and forced to pit.

Kyle Busch got off pit road first during the green-flag cycle, but he was busted speeding on pit road, and his penalty handed the lead to Keselowski.

To make matters even more complicated, the combination of Kenseth staying out on the track too long and the drivers on pit road as the caution flew meant a scoring fiasco for NASCAR as it sorted out which cars were on the lead lap and which cars were a lap down to Kenseth and possibly the other cars who were on pit road at the time of the caution.

"I've never been this confused in a race vehicle in my entire life", Kenseth said. I'm glad it's the last one. Of the Sprint Showdown participants not advancing in the All-Star Race by virtue of winning a segment, the top vote-getter in an online fan vote also will advance to the Sprint All-Star Race.

Kenseth was involved in an accident that included Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne 20 laps into the second segment. Fans cheered as Stewart climbed out of his vehicle under his own power, as he is still recovering from a back injury from earlier this year. "I'm as baffled as everybody".

"I've done it in the past (moved a driver), and one time was really bad", Larson said. "I'm just madder than hell because I don't know how they officiated this race".
